Lesson Plan Outline
Name of lesson: Charlotte's Web Parts of Speech

Subject: English
Grade Level: 3rd grade

Additional Subjects: Literature
Instructional Setting: Classroom

General Description of Lesson: The lesson will begin by separating the kids into five groups with each one having a computer to share. Each group will work together on underlining the different parts of speech in different colors with the smart notebook function. They will be looking for these parts of speech in different excerpts from Charlotte's Web that will be provided. As groups finish up and wait for the rest of the class, they will be asked to work on Charlotte's Web crossword puzzles that they will be given. Next, the class will come back together as one and work together on a Charlotte's Web themed matching parts of speech game that will be projected onto the smart board.

Objective(s) of lesson: The objective of this lesson is to teach the children the difference between the parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb). This lesson will be taught using the help of the famous literary work Charlotte's Web.

Timeline
1-5 minutes
Introduce activity and break up kids into five groups and assign each to a computer. (Teacher 1 begins.)
5-8 minutes
The teacher will use the smartboard to explain the activity/explain highlighter usage on the smart notebook.
8-16 minutes
Kids will work together in their groups on the excerpt activity and then the crossword puzzle if finished early. (At ten minutes teacher 2 takes over.)
16-20 minutes
Kids will close and save to desktop and then come together and sit in the middle. (Teacher will show the students how to save and minimize their activity window. Then instruct them to go sit in the middle).
20-29 minutes
Show example on the game. Then call on individuals to come up to the board and take a turn at the game. (While kids are moving the teacher will pull up the minimized game link on the smartboard. Teacher 3 will take over)
29-30 minutes
Teacher will wrap up by going over what needs to be finished as homework.

Backup plan:
1- In case of offline situation: If computers are not available/working for the first activity, instead we will give them the excerpts printed out on handouts and have them highlight the parts of speech with multicolored highlighters that we will provide. If our next game online fails we will have the children work on character trait worksheets individually in which they will come up with words to describe each character from Charlotte's Web.
2- In case we run of time: We will simply cut the online game short and require them to finish the word search for homework.
3- If we end earlier: Each child can just continue to work on their word searches.
4- In case the camera did not work: We would use Jade's iPhone.
5- In case of having many computers on the right side that did not login: We technically only need 5 working computers so we would just go to the left side. If the left side doesn't work than we'll just use our backup plan.
